Frequently asked questions
Answers to families’ most common questions about getting started, services, caregivers and paying for care.
Getting started
How do we get started?
Call (703) 734-6683 or send a short request. We'll ask what's changed at home and what kind of help you're looking for, then explain the next steps.
Do we need documents for the first conversation?
No. No documents are needed for your first inquiry. We'll explain what's needed later and how to share it securely.
How soon can care begin?
It depends on the schedule you need, caregiver availability and, if you use insurance or a Cardinal Care plan, approval before services begin. We'll talk through timing with you.
Services
What is the difference between Personal Care and Respite Care?
Personal Care is regular help with daily routines such as bathing, dressing and meals. Respite Care gives a family caregiver planned time away while a Harbor caregiver helps at home. Specific coverage programs may require an unpaid primary caregiver.
Does Harbor provide medical care?
No. Harbor provides non-medical care. Caregivers can remind someone to take their medication, but they don't give medications or perform nursing tasks.
Which areas do you serve?
Fairfax County, Fairfax City, Falls Church, Arlington, Alexandria, Loudoun County and Prince William County.
Caregivers
How are caregivers screened?
Screening includes criminal record checks, signed criminal-history disclosures, employment-history review and job-related references. Training and skills are reviewed for assigned care, with licenses or certifications checked when applicable.
Will we have the same caregiver each time?
We aim to keep the same caregivers with a client wherever scheduling allows, because familiarity matters.
What if the caregiver isn't the right fit?
Tell us. We'll talk with you and the supervisor and discuss options, which may include introducing a different caregiver, depending on availability.
Paying for care
Do Cardinal Care health plans cover Personal Care and Respite Care?
For people enrolled in Virginia's CCC Plus Waiver, these services can be covered once they're approved by the person's health plan. How paying for care works
Does Medicare cover this kind of care?
Medicare generally doesn't cover ongoing non-medical personal care at home.
Can we pay privately?
Yes. We explain rates, scheduling and terms in writing before care begins.
