Respite Care

Family caregivers do most of the work of keeping someone at home. Respite care is scheduled, dependable relief — so that work does not have to be continuous.

What respite care covers

  • Bathing, grooming, dressing, and toileting support
  • Transfers and mobility assistance around the home
  • Meal preparation and light housekeeping
  • Reminders and help keeping to a familiar daily routine
  • Companionship and conversation while the family caregiver is away

How it is scheduled

Respite is arranged around the family caregiver’s schedule — a set block each week, a longer stretch, or coverage during a planned absence. The client keeps the same routine, in the same home, while the caregiver rests.

What this does not include

Harbor provides non-medical personal care only. Respite care does not include nursing, therapy, medication administration, wound care, or any other clinical service. If a situation calls for those, we will say so rather than take it on.

Paying for care

Support may be arranged through Medicaid managed care or as private pay. Coverage, eligibility, approved services, authorization, and out-of-pocket responsibility vary by plan and by individual situation. Harbor can help you understand what to ask and where to begin — see coverage and payment options.
