Respite Care · Northern Virginia

Time for yourself.
Support for your loved one.

Caring for someone you love can leave little room for your own needs. Harbor provides planned, non-medical support at home so family caregivers can rest, work or keep appointments while a caregiver follows the agreed care plan.

Room for your own needs

A break belongs in the care plan, too.

You do not need to wait until you feel overwhelmed to ask about respite. Planning ahead helps you and your loved one know what to expect.

Time to rest

Step away from daily caregiving responsibilities to recharge, spend time with friends or enjoy activities you have put aside.

Work & appointments

Arrange support while you manage work, errands or your own healthcare appointments. Discuss the times when help would make the biggest difference.

Your own health

If you need time to rest, recover or care for your own health, a Harbor caregiver can take over your loved one’s usual routines for a planned period.

Planned family commitments

Talk with Harbor before an event or time away. We review the support needed and confirm whether the requested visits can be arranged.

Visit times and hours depend on assessed needs, caregiver availability and any coverage authorization. Harbor confirms arrangements before care begins.

While you take a break

Familiar routines continue at home.

Respite gives the family caregiver time away while the person receiving care has help with daily living. Support is based on assessed needs and the written care plan.

Personal routines

Assistance with bathing, grooming, dressing, toileting and personal hygiene, with respect for privacy and personal preferences.

Meals & everyday tasks

Help with meals, hydration, taking their own medications and light household tasks related to the client’s daily care, following the agreed plan.

Mobility & companionship

Appropriate assistance with walking, positioning or transfers, plus conversation and familiar activities included in the plan.

Harbor’s Respite Care is non-medical. Caregivers do not administer medications, give injections, perform wound care or provide skilled nursing. Medical needs require an appropriate healthcare provider.

Planning a comfortable handoff

Share the details that make a day familiar.

Harbor plans respite around your loved one’s needs, the routines you already use and the times you want support.

Tell us about the routine

Share daily care needs, meal preferences, communication habits and what helps your loved one feel comfortable. Tell us when you would like a break and who to contact while you are away.

Confirm the arrangement

Harbor assesses needs and develops a written care plan. We confirm the visit schedule, caregiver availability, payment arrangements and any required coverage approval before services begin.

Prepare for the visit

Let the caregiver know about any recent changes and where agreed supplies or equipment are kept. The caregiver follows the plan and reports concerns or changes to Harbor.

Review how it went

Share questions or feedback after the visit. Tell Harbor if needs, preferences or scheduling change so the arrangement can be reviewed with you.

Before you get started

Your Respite Care questions, answered.

How is Respite Care different from Personal Care?

Both can involve non-medical assistance with daily living. Respite Care is arranged to give a family caregiver planned time away. Personal Care focuses on the individual’s ongoing daily support needs. Harbor can discuss which service fits your situation.

Can we request occasional or recurring visits?

Tell Harbor whether you need a planned visit or a recurring arrangement. We discuss the hours and tasks needed and confirm what is available. Scheduling depends on the care plan, staffing and any applicable coverage approval.

What if my loved one is unsure about a new caregiver?

Share their concerns, preferred routines and communication needs with Harbor before care begins. Familiar activities and clear expectations can help with the transition. Tell Harbor what worked and what needs adjustment after a visit.

How much does respite cost, and can it be covered?

Harbor explains private-pay rates and terms in writing before services begin. Long-term care insurance depends on your policy. Cardinal Care respite requires applicable eligibility, program requirements and health plan authorization; it is not automatically covered. Waiver respite is for the relief of an unpaid primary caregiver, up to 480 hours per state fiscal year, and is not available when a spouse or the parent of a minor child is paid as the person’s personal care aide. Explore payment and coverage options.

What if we need help on short notice?

Contact Harbor with your requested dates and care needs. We will discuss whether appropriate support can be arranged. Availability is confirmed after planning, staffing and payment or coverage requirements are addressed; a request does not guarantee immediate care.

Is respite only for older adults?

No. Harbor can discuss respite for a family caregiver supporting an adult who needs help with daily living. Service fit depends on the person’s assessed needs and whether Harbor can provide the required non-medical assistance.

Start with a conversation

When would a break help you most?

Tell us about your caregiving routine and the support you are looking for. Harbor will follow up to discuss your loved one’s needs, scheduling, location and ways to pay. You do not need every answer or supporting documents for your first inquiry.
